There are many decisions to make when you decide to build your first home. One of the most important ones will be what home building materials will you choose for your home? Your decision will be partly dictated by your budget, yet if you go for the cheapest home building materials you may end up with a home that is not worth very much as an investment. That means you will not get the maximum price should you decide to sell and move elsewhere in some years time. One of the cheapest materials for cladding is fibro. The new fibro has no health problems attached to it and is certainly fine for homes in temperate areas if they are not prone to wild storms. But if considering fibro, remember it must be painted and that will add to the cost. Then it will need repainting every ten or so years. Fibro can also be broken with relative ease.Brick and sandstone are popular building materials. They are strong and have good insulating properties for either cold or hot climates. Both are more expensive than fibro, but will never need painting, so you dont have any maintenance or upkeep costs.Vinyl cladding is also a popular home building material. It is light and easy to use, does not need painting and comes in a variety of textures and colours. It wears well, but if there is a house or bushfire, it will melt. And the smoke from it is toxic.Timber was once the only form of building material available. Timber weatherboards are strong and hardwearing, but these days may cost quite a bit. They will also need regular painting.
